Assessment process

Four steps to a thorough assessment

A Telehealth consultation in progress
1

Psychiatric consultation

Your psychiatrist reviews your concerns, developmental, medical and mental health history, and whether a full ADHD assessment is the right next step.

2

Psychological assessment

A clinical psychologist completes structured interviews, standardised questionnaires and cognitive testing of attention and executive functioning, and screens for conditions that overlap with ADHD.

3

Collaborative diagnosis

The psychologist's findings are reviewed with the psychiatrist, who determines whether diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met under current guidelines.

4

Feedback and treatment plan

A feedback session and written report with your results and recommendations. Treatment may include medical management with your psychiatrist and skills-based therapy with your psychologist.

How is adult ADHD diagnosed?
Through a collaborative assessment. A psychiatrist first reviews your concerns and history. A clinical psychologist then completes structured interviews, standardised questionnaires and cognitive testing. The psychiatrist reviews all the findings and determines whether the criteria for ADHD are met, and you receive feedback and a written report.
Can ADHD be assessed by Telehealth?
Yes. The core parts of an ADHD assessment, including the clinical interview, rating scales, history and observation, do not need a physical examination, so they can be completed by secure video.
What treatment options are there?
Treatment is tailored to you and may include medication, psychological therapy, coaching and practical strategies. Your psychiatrist explains the options, their benefits and side effects, and the rules that apply to some ADHD medicines in your state or territory.
Do I need a referral?
Yes, a GP referral is needed for the psychiatry part of the assessment and for any Medicare rebate. Fees for the full assessment are confirmed before booking.
How long is the wait?
Availability changes, so please contact our intake team for current timeframes. We will not book anything until you are happy with the timing and the fees.
