What we offer

Four ways a psychiatrist can help

Initial assessment

A comprehensive consultation of 60 to 90 minutes. Your psychiatrist reviews your referral and history, completes a mental state examination, explains the diagnosis and discusses treatment options with you. A report goes back to your GP.

Medication management

Regular review of any medication, including dose changes, side effects and how it fits with your other treatment. Prescriptions are sent electronically, and state rules apply to some medicines.

Follow-up reviews

Appointments of 30 to 50 minutes, usually every 4 to 12 weeks depending on how you are going, with updates to your GP.

Second opinion

A fresh, independent look at a diagnosis or treatment plan when things are complex or not improving. Your psychiatrist reviews your records, reassesses and writes to your GP with recommendations.

What does a psychiatrist treat?
Psychiatrists are medical specialists in mental health. We treat depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and OCD, PTSD and complex trauma, ADHD, eating disorders, personality disorders, co-occurring alcohol and drug problems, perinatal mental health and the mental health side of chronic pain.
Do I need a GP referral to see a psychiatrist?
Yes. A referral from your GP is required, and it is also what makes you eligible for a Medicare rebate. GP referrals to a specialist are usually valid for 12 months. Your GP can send it to us by secure messaging, email or fax.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your psychiatrist reviews your referral and asks about your current symptoms, previous treatment, medical history and life circumstances. You receive an explanation of the diagnosis, a discussion of treatment options and a care plan, and a report is sent to your GP.
Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication by Telehealth?
Yes. Psychiatrists can prescribe by Telehealth, and prescriptions are sent electronically. Some medicines have extra state or territory rules and need regular monitoring, which is managed through follow-up appointments.
Is there a Medicare rebate for Telehealth psychiatry?
Medicare rebates may apply to Telehealth and in-person psychiatry consultations when you have a valid referral. The amount depends on the type and length of the consultation, and we explain your fee and rebate before you book.
