A different approach, with psychiatric oversight

Neurostimulation treatments, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), act on the brain circuits involved in mood in a different way from standard treatments. Other evidence-based options for treatment-resistant depression may also be considered, depending on your history.

Your March Ahead psychiatrist assesses whether a treatment may be suitable, explains the benefits and risks, refers you to an accredited clinic or partner provider, and oversees your care by Telehealth. Treatment itself is delivered at the clinic, with on-site clinical staff and safety monitoring.

Not every option suits everyone. Suitability is decided by your psychiatrist after a full assessment, and you can ask questions at every step.

What are neurostimulation treatments?
Non-invasive treatments that act on the brain circuits involved in mood. TMS uses magnetic pulses, and tDCS uses a very low electrical current. They work differently from standard treatments and are usually considered when those have not helped enough.
Does March Ahead provide the treatment itself?
We provide the psychiatric assessment, referral and ongoing oversight by Telehealth. The treatment is delivered at accredited clinics or partner sites with on-site clinical staff.
Are these treatments covered by Medicare?
It depends on the treatment and whether you meet the criteria. Some attract a Medicare rebate; others involve private costs. Your psychiatrist explains the funding options before you decide.
What happens during treatment?
It varies. Some treatments involve short sessions on most weekdays for several weeks; others need a longer, monitored appointment. Safety monitoring and follow-up are part of every pathway.
