Comprehensive psychiatric services

Specialist care for trauma, mood and adjustment, coordinated around you.

Our psychiatrists have extensive experience in trauma-related conditions, depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties and other service-related mental health challenges. Care begins with a comprehensive assessment and diagnostic evaluation, followed by a treatment plan built with you.

Where therapy is indicated we coordinate referrals to psychologists for evidence-based treatment, and to social workers for family and welfare support, so the people around you are supported as well.

  • Diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning
  • Medication management and review
  • Referral to evidence-based therapies (CBT, ACT, DBT, Schema Therapy) with our clinical psychologists
  • Coordination with your GP and other healthcare providers
  • Regular follow-up by Telehealth or in person

Group therapy

Veterans in our care can also join our online group therapy program, a structured, skills-based group led by consultant psychiatrist Dr Angelo De Gioannis. It complements individual care with a practical framework for handling stress, anxiety and burnout day to day. Learn about group therapy.

Traumatic brain injury services

Our team has expertise in assessing traumatic brain injury and its effects on cognitive functioning, mood and behaviour. When TBI is identified, veterans are connected with the most appropriate management and rehabilitation pathways, including neuropsychologists, neurologists, rehabilitation physicians or specialist TBI programs.

Already have a DVA claim underway?

Your treating psychiatrist can provide the treating reports DVA asks for about your care. If DVA or your advocate needs an independent report, that is a separate service by a different psychiatrist. Learn about independent reports.

Are March Ahead psychiatrists DVA psychiatrists?
Our consultant psychiatrists are FRANZCP Fellows who work extensively with DVA clients. Ongoing care is funded through your DVA Gold or White Card with a GP referral, and DVA-requested independent assessments are arranged through a Treatment Reference Number. We see veterans in Brisbane in person and Australia-wide by Telehealth.
What is the difference between clinical care and an independent report?
Clinical care is ongoing treatment with a treating psychiatrist and needs a GP referral; your treating psychiatrist can also provide the treating reports DVA asks for about your care. An independent report is a one-off assessment by a psychiatrist who is not involved in your treatment, and it does not include treatment.
Do I need a referral for clinical care?
Yes. Ongoing psychiatric care needs a referral from your GP or another specialist, and it is funded through your DVA Gold or White Card. Independent assessments for DVA claims are different and do not need a GP referral.
Can the same psychiatrist do my independent assessment and provide my treatment?
No. The psychiatrist who writes an independent report for your claim does not also treat you. If you need both, different psychiatrists provide them, and your treating psychiatrist can still write the treating reports DVA asks for.
What treatments do you offer?
Comprehensive assessment, diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, medication management, and referral to psychologists for evidence-based therapies and to social workers for family and welfare support.
Is clinical care covered by DVA?
Yes. Ongoing care is fully funded through your DVA Gold or White Card, with no out-of-pocket cost.
Do you have psychologists as well as psychiatrists?
Yes. Our team includes clinical psychologists and a clinical neuropsychologist alongside our consultant psychiatrists.
Is there a waitlist for clinical care?
No. Appointments are typically available within days.
