Home/General Mental Health/Fees and rebates

Fees and rebatesClear fees, confirmed before you book

General Mental Health is a private service. The fee for each appointment, the Medicare rebate where you are eligible, and the amount you pay are set out below, and our intake team confirms them with you in writing before anything is booked.

A person at home on a video consultation with their clinician

Our psychiatry fees are set in line with the Australian Medical Association’s List of Medical Services and Fees, and our psychology fees are set in line with the Australian Psychological Society’s recommended rates.

How our fees work

Three things to know

These are our standard fees. The fee and the Medicare item are set by the type and length of your appointment, and our intake team confirms them with you in writing before anything is booked. Fees current as at 2 November 2026. Medicare rebates are the 85 per cent benefit as at that date and are reviewed each July.

A private practice

We do not bulk bill. Each appointment has a set fee that depends on the type and length of the consultation, and the fee you are quoted is the fee you pay.

Medicare rebates

With a current GP referral, Medicare pays a rebate on each eligible psychiatry consultation. With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare pays a rebate on up to 10 psychology sessions a year. Once your invoice is paid we lodge the claim for you and Medicare pays the rebate to you.

Confirmed in writing

Before your first appointment is booked, our intake team confirms the fee, the item number and the rebate that applies to you, by email or SMS. Your card is verified at booking and charged only after the consultation.

Psychiatry

Consultant psychiatrist fees

A referral from your GP is required for the Medicare rebate. The item billed matches the actual length of the consultation and how it is delivered.

The fee is the same in person, by video or by phone; the Medicare item depends on how the appointment is delivered, and services marked "no phone item" carry no rebate by phone. A current referral is required for any rebate: a GP referral is valid for 12 months and a referral from another specialist for 3 months; there is no rebate without a valid referral. The new-patient initial consultation rebate applies once in 24 months with the same psychiatrist. Without a valid referral you can still be seen and you pay the full fee. Consultations are GST-free and there is no card surcharge.

A consultation with a family member or carer, held with the psychiatrist while the client is not present. Medicare allows up to 15 of these consultations per client each calendar year.

Psychology

Psychologist fees

Medicare rebates apply with a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, or a referral from a psychiatrist. You can also see a psychologist privately without a plan.

Psychology: in person, video or phone
AppointmentMedicare itemin person / video / phoneFeeMedicare rebateYou pay
Clinical psychologist30 to 50 minutes80000 / 91166 / 91181$250.00$101.55$148.45

Registered psychologistover 50 minutes80110 / 91170 / 91184$330.00$101.55$228.45

The fee is the same in person, by video or by phone, and the rebate also applies to phone sessions. Rebates need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, or a referral from a psychiatrist, and Medicare caps the number of rebated sessions each calendar year (10 under Better Access). The rebate depends on your psychologist's registration type; intake confirms it with your fee. Sessions without a plan are charged at the same fee with no rebate. Consultations are GST-free and there is no card surcharge.

Independent reports

Independent psychiatric reports

Our psychiatrists prepare independent psychiatric reports for insurers, employers, superannuation funds, legal matters and individuals. Our role is to provide an impartial, independent clinical opinion; an assessment for a report is separate from ongoing treatment, and no treating relationship is created. Every matter is different, so fees are quoted in writing once the scope of the report and the records involved are known. Contact our intake team to discuss your matter.

Veterans and ADF members seeking a DVA-funded assessment are seen through our Veteran Mental Health service instead.

Before your first appointment

What happens, step by step

  1. 1
You enquire. Use the enquiry form or call us. Tell us which service you are asking about; no medical details are needed at this stage.
  2. 2
Our intake team calls you. We check your referral, confirm the appointment type, and send you the fee, item number and rebate in writing.
  3. 3
You complete one form. We send you a secure link to our registration and consent form, which covers your details, telehealth consent, and financial consent and cancellation policy. It takes about 15 minutes.
  4. 4
Your card is verified, not charged. Your fee is confirmed at booking. We collect and verify your card details through a secure link before the booking is confirmed; nothing is charged at that point. After the consultation the fee is charged to that card, or you can ask to pay by bank transfer instead.
  5. 5
Your appointment. By secure video, or in person at our East Brisbane clinic. Your psychiatrist or psychologist writes to your GP after the first consultation.
  6. 6
Your rebate. Once your invoice is paid we lodge the Medicare claim for you. The rebate is paid into the bank account you have registered with Medicare, usually within a few business days. Register your bank details with Medicare (through myGov or the Express Plus Medicare app) before your first appointment so it is not delayed.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation fees are not rebatable by Medicare. If we can offer your time to someone else, no fee is charged.

Your form

One secure form covers your registration, telehealth consent, and financial consent and cancellation policy:

Please complete it only when our intake team has asked you to; it collects health information and is kept in your clinical record.

Questions about fees

Do I need a referral?
For psychiatry, yes: a current referral from your GP is required for a Medicare rebate, and we ask for it before the first appointment. A GP referral is valid for 12 months and a referral from another specialist for 3 months; there is no rebate without a valid referral. For psychology, Medicare rebates need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP; you can also see a psychologist privately without one.
How much will I pay out of pocket?
The fee for each appointment type, the Medicare rebate and the amount you pay are set out on this page. These are our standard fees; the item and fee are set by how long the appointment actually runs, and our intake team confirms the exact figures for your appointment, in writing, before anything is booked.
Do you bulk bill?
No. General Mental Health is a private service. Where you are eligible, we lodge the Medicare claim for you after the appointment and the rebate is paid into your bank account.
Can I use private health insurance?
Private health insurance does not cover consultations with a psychiatrist or psychologist outside hospital. Some extras policies contribute to psychology sessions when no Medicare rebate is claimed for that session; check with your fund.
Is there a limit on Medicare rebates?
Psychiatry rebates apply to each eligible consultation with a valid referral. A new-patient initial consultation rebate applies once in 24 months with the same psychiatrist, and family or carer consultations are limited to 15 a year. Psychology rebates under Better Access are limited to 10 sessions each calendar year. Once your out-of-pocket medical costs pass the yearly Medicare Safety Net threshold, Medicare pays a higher rebate on further services.
Can I have my appointment by phone?
Yes, where it is clinically suitable. The fee is the same, but some psychiatry services have no Medicare phone item, so there is no rebate for those by phone; book them by video or in person to receive the rebate. Psychology sessions attract the rebate by phone as well.
What if I need to cancel or change my appointment?
Please give us as much notice as you can so the time can be offered to someone else. Our cancellation terms are set out above, and a cancellation fee cannot be claimed from Medicare.
